The city was incorporated in 1915, but holds its place in history in 1905 as the first city in south Alabama to host a major railroad station. That railroad ran from Foley to the close city of Bay Minette. Although the City of Foley is considered to be a tourism-dependent region, it’s making great strides in maintaining and progressing its economic hub. For example, after all these years, Foley is still a southern hub spot for agricultural goods.
Before the city was incorporated, Foley began simply as fields yielding crops and space ready for development. Hailing from Chicago, John B. Foley purchased 50,000 acres of land and created the first railroad station in south Alabama in 1902. Foley’s location became convenient, because of its close proximity to interstate highways, international shipping and air service. Those industries are now the driving force in Foley’s expansion today. Along with economic growth, Foley has seen an increase in the job market over the last year, according to Sperling’s Best Places. Foley is also conveniently located next to cities like Mobile and Pensacola. With its population reaching just over 20,000 residents, Foley is the right place to experience southern charm and city life all at the same time. The city has even been recognized as an Alabama Communities of Excellence destination.
