5 Ways To Get To Know Your Neighbors In Your Community
Apartment living comes with endless benefits. One of those benefits is having a built-in community right outside your door. There’s always the question of how you can make a good first impression to not only be a respectful neighbor, but a friendly one. However, at times it can be daunting to meet new people. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of five ways to get to know your neighbors in your community.
Use your community’s common areas
One incredible benefit of apartment living is the opportunity to have convenient, on-site amenities right outside your door. This means common areas are not only easier to get to, but easier to find and connect with your neighbors. Utilize the pool area to lounge, hang out and get to know residents who also use that area in their free time. Pavilions are another great area to get to know who you live next to. Everyone loves food! Grill a meal outdoors and share with others for a great way to connect with one another. Your community’s fitness center and pet park are awesome places to find neighbors who share the same interests and hobbies as you. The opportunities in your community are endless!
Random acts of kindness
Kindness goes a long way, especially now more than ever! Random acts of kindness is an incredible way to make a great positive impression. Not only is this something we should all do, but showing your neighbors you care about them can truly instill a sense of true community. Try leaving a kind note on someone’s door, complimenting your neighbor on their outdoor decorations or even making and bringing dinner to a resident in another building. The great thing about showing kindness to those around you is it usually is an action that continues to give. One act of kindness can encourage others to do the same for others!
Deliver baked goods to a neighbor
Cookies are the go-to welcome wagon for a great reason! Baked goods are not only tasty but can easily bring a smile to your neighbor’s face knowing you thought about them! Explain this gesture is to be a friendly neighbor and that’s sure to spark up a genuine conversation and friendship. Whether it’s cookies, homemade bread or brownies, your neighbors are sure to love the kind gesture! Just be sure to let your neighbors know what’s inside the goods in case of allergies.
Help a neighbor move in
We all know that moving can be a pain oftentimes. When moving into a new home in a new place, the move can be tiresome and the transition can extend overtime. Why not lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need? Even just 15 to 30 minutes can be a huge help, and it’s also a great opportunity to introduce yourself. Offering to help can even put your neighbors at ease knowing they have a caring community they’re surrounded by in their new home. These gestures leave lasting impressions and opportunities for future conversations. Who knows, there might come a day you may need help and that same neighbor is ready to lend a hand. When you live in an apartment home, community is always at the core!
Engage in conversation
Saying hello may be a small gesture, but it lets people know you’re friendly and approachable. Those are the characteristics every resident hopes to have in their neighbors! Engaging in conversation may lead you to find out you may have more things in common than you originally thought, or share the same interests! This is a great way to give yourself the opportunity to gain a new perspective or a new friend!

What To Do Before You Leave Your Apartment or Home Over the Holidays
Do you have an exciting trip or family vacation plans this holiday season? If so, it is important to prepare your home or apartment for your extended leave. We will discuss some key actions you should take before you leave, so you can enjoy your break worry-free. When anticipating a trip, it is easy to let crucial tasks go unfinished and preparation beforehand seems like too much unless you have an organized list to go by. Aside from quadruple checking your luggage and destination itinerary or getting your pets to the animal borders, there are a few things you should consider in advance to protect your home or apartment so you can have peace of mind while away.
One of the first things to consider is letting your trusted family, neighbors or property manager know you are leaving so they can monitor your place and belongings. Having an “all’s good” text while you are enjoying yourself can lower any anxiety you potentially could incur if you did not know at all. They can also collect any mail or packages you receive during your absence so you know they are safe and taken care of. The last thing you want to do after returning from a nice, relaxing vacation is walking into a dirty home. It is not the most exciting planning portion of the list, but tidying up and cleaning out the fridge, dishes and trash will feel very rewarding when you get back so you can get right back to focusing on your normal routines again. Cleaning before the vacation isn’t just for your own sanity; it also will prevent possible disasters like stink or fruit flies. When you are frantically cleaning the house and packing your bags, it is easy to forget the obvious things. For instance, the last load of laundry you forgot to put in the dryer. Try to avoid the souring smell or damage to your items by double-checking the washer!
To save on your energy bill and avoid a possible electric fire, make sure you unplug all the electronics in the house like routers, televisions, computers and unused chargers. If you have a more modern thermostat you should be able to use a “away” feature that will regulate your heating and cooling so you can return to a comfortable home temperature. A good precaution for potential break-ins is putting your outdoor or visible from the road lights on timers or leaving some lamps on. It is pretty simple to upgrade to smart bulbs if you have the time, but regardless you will want to take the curiosity from an intruder. Double check your parking situation and make sure your car is locked with no important belongings whether it is in the closed garage, airport lot or apartment community. Lastly, make sure you check all your windows and doors and make sure they are securely locked, especially the seldom-used ones as they are easily overlooked. These seemingly tedious tasks will be greatly appreciated in the long run when you return from a restful vacation to see that your efforts left your possessions safe and secure (and clean)!

Tips To Help You Prepare For Hurricane Season
If you have lived in the south, then you know hurricanes are a big deal. Preparations are needed to secure your home, supplies need to be on hand for emergencies and an evacuation plan needs to be prepared if the situation calls for it. Other than these normal preparations, what tips can help you better prepare for a hurricane? At South Pointe Apartments and Homes, we’re used to hurricane season and what it brings. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of important tips to help you prepare for hurricane season.
Make a plan
As we all know, hurricanes are unpredictable. In the case of a last-minute evacuation being ordered, it’s important to know what to do and where to go to evacuate. That’s why it’s critical to have an emergency plan on hand for anything unexpected. Make a plan to have necessities ready to go and a way to stay updated to follow any local community orders. Decide where you plan to evacuate and have personal documents and information included when you pack.
Secure the exterior
One way to help minimize damage to your home is to bring all outside patio furniture, toys and potted plants indoors. Move your vehicle away from trees with loose branches, branches that can potentially drop onto your vehicle or power lines during the hurricane. If necessary, secure any outdoor sculptures or newly planted trees with blankets or burlap tied with rope. If you’re in a home, consider plywood or storm shutters to protect your windows.
Power up
Make sure to power up all of your technological devices to have ready in the case of power loss or evacuation. Along with powering up your devices, fill up your car’s gas tank to add to your preparations. Gas stations may be out of gas depending on your area so it’s important to have that taken care of before the hurricane hits. Test your generator and have plenty of fuel if you have one to ensure it will work if the time comes.
Store important documents
If you store your important documents and haven’t taken a look at them, make sure to pull those documents out and have them ready to take in the case of a last-minute evacuation. Some of these documents can include marriage licenses, financial papers, birth certificates and legal documents. Even valuable and sentimental items you want to keep should be stored and packaged for travel to ensure safety.
Prep an emergency kit
No one wants to find themselves in a situation where they do not have the supplies they need during an emergency. Before a hurricane, gather non-perishable foods, flashlights, batteries, candles, matches, cash, bottled water, clothing, toiletries, blankets, a portable radio, medical supplies and more to help ensure your safety in case the unexpected happens. Having these supplies on hand will help your experience during a hurricane.
Identify a shelter room
If you choose to bear the storm during a hurricane, be sure to identify a shelter room in your home to avoid injury in case windows, doors or your home’s structure is breached. The best shelter room usually has no windows and is in a central part of your home. Try to avoid all unprotected windows and doors until the hurricane passes. If the hurricane strengthens, your shelter room will be your best option until the hurricane is through.
Implementing steps of preparation for hurricane season can be the difference in a make-or-break situation. South Pointe Apartments and Homes is committed to keeping our residents safe during hurricane season.
